This can be done in one of two ways: either each guest will be given a tiny package that holds a sleeping butterfly; or the bride and groom will release the butterflies from one large package. How does it work? The butterflies sleep in the dark, and when the packages are opened, they are exposed to light and soar up into the sky. They will move quite slowly upon release, because they have just woken up from a deep sleep. They might even land in your hair or on your bouquet, so make sure your photographer is ready! Butterflies can be purchased from butterfly farms, and are never harmed – typically these companies will only ship them to areas where the butterflies can safely find habitation after the ceremony.
