Celtic Wedding Dresses

-- Celtic Wedding Dresses --

Choosing to highlight your family ancestry or traditions on your wedding day is an important element of the planning for many couples.

If your family has Irish, Scottish, or Celtic ties, you may choose to wear a traditional Celtic wedding dress. Maybe you don’t have any family connection, but have always loved the folklore and fairy tales that stem from this region. Traditionally long sleeved, the Celtic wedding gown is romantic, beautiful, and timeless.

Top Tip!

Before you buy anything online, make sure to check out the wedding dresses being offered on eBay. You can often find new or lightly used dresses at a fraction of what they cost in stores:

Celtic Knot

One of the most timeless designs in the world is the Celtic knot, an integral part of the wedding ceremony. The knot represents eternal love, with no beginning and no end. If you are wearing a modern wedding dress, you may still choose to incorporate Celtic knots into your design through embroidery, or reflect the design in your jewelry. You can even “tie the knot” into your overall theme. Your cake decorator will likely have some great ideas on how you can interweave this theme into your wedding cake! Have it embossed on your invitations and printed on your menus to add to the entire day.

Timeless Embroidery

Your traditional Celtic wedding dress may feature embroidery of the Celtic knot or Celtic cross. This can fine detailing will add to the depth of your gown, creating a unique style. For a subtle look, choose a light embroidery color that is similar to the color of your dress; for a bolder statement, have the embroidery done in deep red, gold, or even black!

You’ve Got the Look

Many Celtic dresses feature a fitted bodice, often in red or some other dark color. This offers a dramatic contrast to the full white skirt, and white sleeves. The sleeves may be removed for a summer wedding. The bodice will usually be boned, with corsetry in the back – and likely made of a gorgeous medieval material like rich velvet. Look for embroidery on the bodice itself. With a modest neckline and flattering styling, this style of dress will look stunning on most body types. Long and flowing, with fine Celtic-inspired detailing, sums up the look of the Celtic brides nicely.

While most brides still choose to wear white on their wedding day, more and more women are choosing to wear a wedding gown in a dramatic hue. The royalty-like styling of Celtic wedding gowns lends itself well to rich colors in deep jewel tones, like purple, burgundy, and deep green or blue.

Where To Find It

You may have some difficulty finding the Celtic inspired dress of your dreams – but thanks to the internet, you can contact some of top designers in Ireland and Scotland directly! Designer Lindsay Fleming is an example of a dress designer who will create a wonderful Celtic gown just for you! If you are working with a smaller budget, you might consider hunting for your dress on online auction sites, or visiting local thrift shops (you never know what might pop up!). Attend a renaissance fair and speak to members of the community – someone will likely know someone who can help you find, or create, the dress of your dreams!

From Celtic knots to royal colors, celebrate your special day Celtic-style! Like your love, the Celtic knot has no beginning or end.
