If you’ve decided to design your own unique wedding cake, your first step should be to get an idea of what you love. Rip out magazine pages, print off photos, and photocopy cake pictures from fancy baking books. Keep everything in a special folder, and soon you will begin to see a pattern in the cakes that have caught your eye. At a cake’s very basic core, there are two things you need to consider: Taste, and Style. Make notes on both of these elements!

Taste

Do you love lemon? Did you and hubby-to-be fall in love over a shared crème caramel on your first date? Do you want to incorporate elements from your cultural heritage into your cake? Be creative! Choose flavors you both love, choose flavors that mean something to you, or choose flavors that match your wedding theme and style. A visit to the local bakery will allow you to sample flavors – or begin taking notes when you dine out. You’ll have to order dessert a little more often – but it’s all in the sake of research!

To Bake or Not to Bake

Designing your own wedding cake doesn’t necessarily mean you have to bake it on your own! You can follow all the steps of creating your own cake, and then meet with a bakery that can turn your dream into a reality. Perhaps they have a couple of cakes to choose from – you can likely ask them to adjust the looks slightly to make it uniquely yours. Or, if there is someone in your circle who is an excellent baker, you can have this person create your work of art. Be sure to do a few trial runs first to make sure you share the same vision!

Style

What is your style? Is it elegant, contemporary, and sophisticated? Are you traditional, modest, and classic? Or are you a wild child with a love of the unexpected? Translate your personal style into the look of your wedding cake, and you’ll be thrilled with the results. Designing your own wedding cake is all about taking elements of your personality as a couple, and translating it into a sweet confection.

Work With It

You don’t have to go completely one route or another! Consider purchasing a pre made cake, and then adding to it to make it personalized. You can head to the grocery store and order a few plain white cakes. You can then add to them. Serve them on beautiful cake platters of various heights (Bonus: they are yours to keep after the wedding!), and decorate them as you wish. Some ideas? Glazed or sugared fruit, edible flowers, or pre-purchased sugar decorations!

Have fun thinking “outside the cake box” and planning unique ways to spin your wedding cake into a reflection of your personal taste! If you plan on doing multiple taste tests, you might need to add a few days at the gym – but it will be worth it when your guests ooh and ahh over your creation.
