Italian weddings are all about tradition, fashion, and passion! Bring this to life with your wedding cake! You might not be able to purchase a Valentino “gateau” but you can certainly show off your unique sense of style - and serve up a chic, gorgeous cake on your wedding day. Oh – and Italians are all about flavor and food to, so make sure you have lots of taste tests before the big day to get just the right flavor experience!
Traditional Italian Wedding CakeA traditional Italian wedding cake consists of thick cream cheese frosting (yum!), delicious white cake, and a coconut filling. Although it is traditionally served at various bridal functions, you can also serve it as your main wedding cake. Torta Chantilly is a sponge cake with Chantilly cream, with white chocolate scales all over the cake. St Honore is made of puff pastry and cream puffs. “Crustata de fruta” is a classic tart filled with vanilla cream and fruit. Traditionally, most Italian cakes will consist of variations on a theme: sweet, pastry, cream, and sponge cake.

Classic European Add a distinctively stylish flair to your event by serving a scrumptious cake in a European flavor. Take inspiration from classic desserts, such as tiramisu. Chantilly cream, amaretto, limoncello liqueur, espresso, chocolate mousse and fresh whipped cream are all delicious flavors you can add to your cake fillings that will keep your guests asking for more! Flaky pastries filled with custard, filled cream puffs, and imported Italian almonds are all glorious additions to any cake combination your baker offers.
Dessert CourseIt is customary for Italian weddings to feature a decadent array of desserts, including pastries, sweets, cakes, and fruit. This is called a “Viennese Table” and even has its own name – “Vienna Hour.” Modernize the concept by making all the sweets have a shared theme, such as lemon delight for a yellow themed wedding or black and white for a more contemporary spin.
Bitter & SweetAnother Italian traditional includes the distribution of sugared almond, which represents the wedding by uniting the bitter with the sweet. Make this tradition work for you by decorating a sophisticated wedding cake with sugared almonds. Or, use the sugared almonds as a treat for your guests, and have little tulle-wrapped bag awaiting each friend at their place setting!
The Perfect CakeMake sure your Italian wedding cake looks as good as it tastes! Spend some time looking through wedding magazines and websites to find a style of cake that you love. You may choose to have Italian flavoring with a more contemporary wedding cake – it’s up to you! Visit your baker with a good idea of what you are looking for, but keep your mind open to his or her suggestions. Listening to the pros is important – while this is all new to you, they’ve been creating and baking cakes for years! You may be able to find a baker who is Italian, and caters to the local Italian community. Word of mouth is usually the best way to find the best baker – nothing beats a recommendation from someone who has worked with the company first hand! Check local online bridal boards to see who’s making headlines!
Design & DécorBe sure that your cake has a special table prepared in advance: it should be decorated to match the rest of your reception. Check with your reception ahead of time as they will likely have a special table that is normally used for precisely this purpose. With some swirls of tulle, some scattered rose petals and maybe some twinkling lights, you’ll set the perfect stage for one of your wedding’s main characters: the wedding cake! Don’t forget to have a piece – and watch out! Italian tradition includes throwing cake at the bride! This is one tradition you may want to do without (and your dry cleaner will be pleased as well!).
