Make Your Own Wedding Cake

-- Make Your Own Wedding Cake --

Make Your Own Wedding Cake

In these times, many brides want to save money whenever and wherever they can!

Whether you want to save money, or you love to bake and love to do things yourself, you can make your own wedding cake! Making your own wedding cake is a big project, and needs to be started well in advance.

Plan it Out

If you are trying to decide whether or not to make your cake yourself, it’s important to make a plan – and a budget. Write down everything you will need to purchase to make your own wedding cake, including ingredients, decorative items, and baking essentials such as pans and icing tools. Be sure to price everything out properly. If you are making your own cake to save money, you may find it is actually quite expensive to purchase all the items you will need. Be sure to include in your budget twice the amount of ingredients; as you will need to make a practice cake at some point. You can avoid extra costs by borrowing the items, using items you already have, and choosing to make a cake that is more simple than elaborate.

Trial and Error

If you are an experienced baker, then baking a wedding cake should not be that different from your usual baking. If, however, you’ve never baked before, it’s time to start practicing! Bake cookies, cakes, cupcakes and pies until you have a feel for baking. This will also increase your confidence (but be sure you have friends to help you eat your goodies!).

Once you’re confident, it’s time to try baking the actual cake. It’s great if you have some sort of event you can bring it to, such as a baby shower or a Christmas party, so as not to waste it.

Decorating Your Own Wedding Cake

If you have a bit of extra pocket money and some free time, consider signing up for a cake-decorating course. These are offered at many different locations, including cooking schools, grocery stores, and craft shops. You will learn the basics of how to frost a cake, and how to make some decorative edgings such as piping or flowers. If money is tight, you can borrow books from the library or watch videos online.

On the Big Day

Make Your Own Wedding CakeYou’ll need to bake your cake fairly soon before the wedding day so it is fresh. On your wedding day, you will need to have a plan of action. Who will transport the cake from your home to your reception site, if necessary? Will the cake need to be stored in a refrigerator? Depending on the type of frosting you have used and the humidity level outside, you may need to keep your cake in a cool place until it is ready to be served.

Who will serve the cake?

If you are the bride-to-be and are considering making your own wedding cake, be sure that this will make sense. It may seem like a wonderful idea in the months before your wedding, but as the big day draws nearer, you may find it overwhelming. If you’ve decided to bake your own cake, you may want to have a trusted friend or family member agree to help you out with the project. Good luck baking your wedding cake. After all, today’s bride can bake her own cake – and eat it too!
