Scottish Wedding Dresses

-- Scottish Wedding Dresses --

Weddings are all about a coming together of worlds!

You should each feel comfortable showcasing elements of your particular culture, whether they are the same or different!

For Scottish brides, this can mean choosing a traditional Scottish wedding dress. If you’re marrying someone of Scottish descent, why not surprise him by walking down the aisle in traditional Scottish bridal wear? His whole family will be pleased and it will show your acceptance of his heritage!

Choosing the right tartan may take a bit of research. Speak to family elders to learn about his clan origins, or consult a specialist to make sure you choose the right colors.

Top Tip!

Before you buy anything online, be sure to check out the wedding dresses being offered on eBay. You can often find new or lightly used dresses at a fraction of what they cost in stores:

A Touch of Tartan

A traditional Scottish wedding dress is white or cream, so depending on how traditional you want to go, you can likely simply choose the traditional white wedding dress of your dreams!

Then, have fun adding some tartan embellishments! A tartan ribbon around your bouquet is a wonderful touch, or a tartan sash around your waist. Add some tartan in unexpected ways for added panache, such as tartan shoes or a tartan ribbon woven through your hair. A plaid shawl can be draped over your shoulders.

Tartan piping can be a beautiful touch as well, tying in well with your wedding colors. You may have your bridesmaids and groomsmen wear touches of the same pattern as well.

If you don’t love tartan, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have some ancient history woven into your dress! Have a Celtic knot or a border of Celtic knots embroidered into your gown. The Celtic knot is a symbol of everlasting love – perfect for your wedding day attire! Your Celtic knotting can be done in any color you please, ideally matching the groom’s kilt. Consider giving Celtic cross jewelery to your attendants as gifts.

A Scottish Design

Not a huge fan of plaid? To add a Scottish element to your day without going all-out Celtic, you can add a modern twist to your heritage by ordering a gown from a Scottish designer. There might not be plaid woven into it, but you will still be giving a nod to your heritage. Your dress will be shipped directly to you from across the seas!

A Highland Statement

Traditionally, the tartan goes to the men on the big day as they wear traditional clan colors and kilts, and the bride stands by their side wearing a traditional white or off-white gown. For the bold bride of Scottish heritage, consider wearing a completely tartan dress on your wedding day!

Tartan dresses are available from a wide variety of designers and can be a very elegant choice. The groom might pin a piece of his clan’s tartan onto his bride to show the coming together of the two families.

A Scottish Theme

Whether you’re returning to your own families’ roots or celebrating your husband’s Scottish background, you can incorporate Scottish touches throughout your day. Having someone play the bagpipes as you walk up the aisle, and having the men wear traditional kilts are no-brainers. Add a traditional Gaelic hymn and tartan themed invitations to create a total event of it.

Your honeymoon destination? Scotland, of course!
