There’s something about a silk wedding dress that adds timeless grace, stunning beauty, and classic elegance to a bride’s overall image.

Silky Silk

Silk is one of the most common and traditional fabrics used to create wedding gowns, as it is smooth and oh-so-soft. Silk threads can be woven into many other fabrics, so many of the gowns you see are actually derivatives of silk, such as satin, charmeuse, chiffon, organza, and some tulle. Many gowns are made from synthetic fibers that have similar appearances to silk, so depending on your budget, you might choose to purchase a gown that looks like silk. Silk can be very very light, or quite heavy, depending on the type of fabric. Some lightweight silk dresses will be backed with a heavier fabric.

Silk quality is measured in “momme” (mm) which is a Japanese term indicating the weight in pounds of 100 yards of silk cloth measuring 45” wide. The lighter your fabric is, the more delicate and difficult to handle it will be.

Eco-Friendly Silk Wedding Dresses

If you are planning an eco-friendly affair, and want a wedding dress that fits in with your values, consider wearing a fashionable gown made of sustainable fabric. Many designers specialize in environmentally friendly, biodegradable formal wear –simply search online for a designer who suits your tastes, and your budget. Silk has a gorgeous natural sheen, and is available in many different blends, each with its own subtle characteristics. Look for blends like Hemp Silk Satin, Hemp Silk Charmeuse, Natural Silk Shantung, Natural Silk Chiffon, and Natural Silk Charmeuse, all of which should avoid harsh chemicals, dyes, and bleaches. If you’re looking for a vegan option, be sure to double check with your designer before you order.

Silk Wedding Dress Cleaning

If you’ve invested in a silk wedding gown, you’ll want to cherish it for years to come. That means taking care of it from day one! One must be very careful with cleaning silk, as it can affect the sizing. Dry-cleaning is usual the best option, but some stains will need to be cleaned with wet cleaning. For best results, head to a cleaner that specializes in high-quality fabrics – they will have unique processes that will remove stains while carefully preserving the gown and protecting any delicate bead work or sequins.

A Season for Silk

Because silk is such a versatile fabric, it is appropriate for weddings taking place during any time of the year! For warmer-season weddings, brides should choose gowns that will leave them comfortable under the sunshine. Look for a wedding dress made of chiffon, a very sheer woven silk that is very lightweight. Charmeuse is another fabulous option for a silk summer dress, as it has a semi-lustrous finish and a gorgeous drape, resulting in a stunning silhouette. In the winter time, brides are wise to choose gowns in heavier fabrics, such as Shantung, a heavy raw silk with a slightly rough surface, or Thai Silk, which is light but very smooth.

Although real silk can be expensive, it’s gorgeous look and feel is worth it for many brides! If you have your heart set on a silk wedding gown, be sure to try on several different styles to find the style and fabric blend that is perfect for you!
