If you and your partner are more “funky and crazy” than “traditional and classic,” you may choose to take a walk on the wild side when it comes to your wedding cake.
A wedding cake doesn’t have to be a conventional white tiered cake with a miniature bride and groom topping it (although this sort of cake is certainly a timeless option!). For a cake that has as much personality as you do, just think outside the (cake) box!
Crazy ColorsChoose a selection of wild colors to bring your cake to life! If you already have a color theme, you can use it as a base. If not, choose a theme: pastels, brights, or naturals are just a few! Then, have your cake decorator design a colorful palette for each layer! This could mean a 4 tiered cake consisting of bright blue, grass-green, sunshine yellow, and fuchsia. Add polka dots or stripes to add to the fun.
Topsy TurvyWho says cake tiers need to be placed perfectly on top of one another? Lots of brides are opting for a whimsical cakes in fun colors and textures, that are piled high and appear that they may fall over (don’t worry – they won’t!).
Hobbies & SentimentsIf you and your husband share a love of something – anything – consider incorporating it into your wedding cake. Love baseball? Why not serve a cake that looks like a pile of baseballs? Do love to scuba dive? A bright blue sea-inspired cake will do the trick 0 complete with a palm tree and a pair of snorkelers! Did you meet in Spain? Why not serve up a decorated map of the country? Be imaginative, and think of something that means a lot to your relationship! If your cake is overflowing with sentimental value, it will be be even more well received! -- Unusual Wedding Cakes --
Fancy FlavorsChoosing a wedding cake isn’t just about how it will look – you can show off your personality with the taste as well! Exotic brides will be happy to show off their island side by serving up pineapple, guava, or passion-fruit flavored cakes and fillings. Did you meet at a coffee shop? Espresso and mocha, please! Do you love ice-cream? There’s no reason not to serve an ice-cream cake on your wedding day!
Top it All OffWhen it comes to wild cakes, most cake decorators choose to use rolled fondant as a topping. So, what is rolled fondant anyway? It’s a type of icing that is rolled out like a pie crust and then draped over a cake and molded to it. It has a smooth appearance and is extremely versatile: it can be dyed to virtually any color. While it’s not as indulgent tasting as a classic buttercream frosting, most cake decorators agree it is the topping of choice for elaborate cakes. So, if you are more about how the cake looks then how it tastes (not that it will taste bad) choose fondant. Want the best of both worlds? Ask your baker if he or she can incorporate a layer of buttercream frosting under the fondant; and use a rich filling (or double up on the buttercream – it’s that good!) on the interior of your cake. -- Unusual Wedding Cakes --
The “No-Cake” OptionThere’s no rule that says you have to serve cake! Love strawberry shortcake? Why not serve up a fancy buffet style shortcake station? Individual cakes are a popular option as well – choose either fancy cupcakes or individual cheesecakes. You can serve chocolate covered fruit, mousse, or any other delight! Perhaps you and your fiancé have a special dessert that reminds you of your first date or your engagement – let your guests in on the story while serving up the unique dish. Wedding cakes can be as daring and bold as like. Talk to your baker and think of unique ways to make your cake truly personalized: from the flavor to the design, you get to choose each step of the way! Have fun planning your cake – and don’t forget to have a slice! -- Unusual Wedding Cakes --
