Wedding Cake Decorations

-- Wedding Cake Decorations --

A wedding cake without decorations is just a cake! Whether you plan to make your wedding cake at home, or have a close family member or friend create it for you, or if you plan to purchase an “undone” cake to cut down on costs, you’ll want to have a solid plan of action for decorating your cake. Or, maybe you just want to get some inspiration for wedding cake decorations to take to your professional cake decorator. No matter what your situation is, adding some décor to your cake will add more than just a few flowers – it will add a sense of personality and style!

Get Inspired

The first step in most wedding planning stages is to get inspired! Spend some time on wedding websites, read some magazines, and head to your local bookstore. Once you’ve determined what you love and what you hate, it will be easier to go forward with the decision making process. Does your wedding have a particular theme or color scheme? If so, you will want to work your wedding cake decorations around that main idea. Take inspiration from your wedding dress, your bouquet, or your venue, which can all be translated into wedding cake décor!

Real Flowers

Many brides choose to use real flowers as their main wedding cake decorations! After all, it’s easy, fairly cost effective, and naturally beautiful. But be careful – there are a few things you’ll need to consider if you decide to feature fresh flowers on your cake. For one, you’ll need to make sure that any chemicals in the flower do not run into your cake. Carefully wrap clipped stems in saran wrap to tin foil to protect the cake, if you plan to insert them. You might choose to use edible flowers, such as pansies. If the flowers on your cake are not edible, make sure that they are not placed on guests’ plates. Real flowers can add a stunning touch of whimsy to any cake! For a modern look, have the blooms placed asymmetrically to look like a garland coming down one side of the cake.

Wedding Cake Supplies

There are tons of decorations that you can purchase for your wedding cake, which can give your cake a professional and chic appearance. You can purchase edible glitter dust, edible pearls, sugar crystals, and sanding sugar. You can also purchase theme oriented decorations such as autumn leaves, sugar roses, tulips or crosses, most of which are made from sugar and food coloring. Icing products such as pearl or sparkly dust, rolled fondant, writing gel or string icing are all available to turn your cake into a work of art.

Decorating Your Own Wedding Cake

If you plan to decorate your own cake at home, it is wise to practice a few times in advance, especially if this is a new talent! Start by sketching out your plan on paper, and if you are not the bride, be sure to discuss the plans with the bride-to-be! You’ll then want to do a practice run, or two, to make sure the cake tastes fabulous, and looks fabulous!

Decorating a wedding cake is a fun project, and who knows? Maybe it will lead to a new hobby or skill. Spend time finding the perfect wedding cake decorations to ensure that your cake is all it can be!
