Wedding Cake Styles

Planning a wedding means lots of decisions!

From the gown to the guest-list, and everything in between, as a bride you’ll need to learn when to say “yes,” when to say “no,” and when to say, “I need help!”

When you come around to the business of planning your wedding cake, the first thing you’ll need to think about is style. In fact, planning your wedding is truly all about that one word: style. What is your personal style? If you are able to articulate this, you will find making all those little decisions along the way much easier. Take a few moments to think about the style of your wedding: what you envision, and what you want the overall feel to be. When it comes to wedding cakes, there are lots of styles to choose from. Let’s take a look at what’s out there!

Traditional

A traditional wedding cake is: a) white. B) vanilla, and c) three tiers. If you answered “all of the above,” you are correct! Traditional wedding cakes feature butter-cream frosting, several layers, and are topped with a small figure representing the happy couple. These time-honored cakes are perfect for the bride and groom who want an elegant affair that is rich in tradition.

Modern/ Contemporary

Modern wedding cakes throw tradition to the wind! Brides and grooms are adding splashes of color, interesting flavors, and unique designs to the cakes to make them truly one-of-a-kind works of art. From the rich fillings to the finest ingredients and whimsical designs, wedding cakes are making bold statements like never before. A modern cake is characterized by sleek lines, funky designs, and non-traditional elements in relation to presentation and taste. If you want to add your own personal touch to your wedding cake, then choose a unique design that suits your tastes!

Funny

If you want to add a bit of zany character to your cake, this is usually done with the finishing touch: the wedding topper. Choose a funny figurine of the bride pulling the groom up the cake, or add a bobble-headed couple made to replicate the bride and groom.

Wild

If you want to get really wild with your wedding cake, go for it! From replications of buildings to topsy-turvy mad-hatter cakes, your wedding cake can be something straight out of your imagination! Cake bakers today can create virtually anything out of cake, fondant, and a bit of creativity, so don’t be afraid to ask for something a little ( or a lot) different. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to wedding cake – just makes sure everyone gets a slice!

Size

You can get creative when it comes to the size of your wedding cake, too! While some couples are opting to serve miniature cakes to each guest, other couples are going larger than life and serving up slices from huge cakes! Whether you choose to serve a plethora of tiny cakes, or a few interestingly shaped tiers, or one large cake, your guests will be delighted by the different proportions you’re offering up.

There are just as many styles of wedding cakes as there are styles of brides – so it’s important to let your personality shine through! From the tall and short, the colorful to the plain, and the exotic to the traditional, each cake is unique in its own way. Have fun choosing, and don’t forget to focus on the flavor just as much as the design and presentation!
