* Talk to a seamstress before trying any dresses on. This way you can get your measurements before you go, and she'll tell you what size of dress will work best with the alterations that need to be done.

* Try searching online for your perfect dress. As long as you know your measurements, it should be easy to find a dress you love. (plus it's usually cheaper!)

* Design your own dress and have it custom made. This way the measurements will be suited to your body type from the beginning, and you wont have to alter it later on.

* For the best deals, look into used dresses. They likely have only been used once, but are much, much cheaper. This way any alterations wont push up the budget too much.

Sizing

This can be tricky if you don't know hat you're doing.. But its really pretty simple!

The number one rule is - don't go by the tag! It doesn't matter if its a size 0 or a size 32. What you want to pay attention to are the actual measurements of the dress (hips, waist, bust, etc).

You'll have to measure yourself, then find a dress that has similar measurements. But be sure to choose a larger dress than you need so there's room for alterations. - Better safe than sorry!

Also, show your seamstress a picture of your chosen dress before you buy it. Get an estimate and an opinion about if the alterations are possible for your dress's style.
