White Wedding Dresses

-- White Wedding Dresses --

These days, wedding dress designers are coming out with wedding gowns in virtually every color – from the palest pinks to the deepest reds. If you are a traditional bride, however, you might be shopping amongst the white wedding gowns – which still make up the majority of wedding gowns on and off the rack.

Shades of White

Saying that you want a white wedding dress is like saying you want chocolate – it’s quite general! Are you craving dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white chocolate? Similarly, choosing a white dress is not as simple – there are more shades of white than any other color, after all! White dresses can be broken down into several basic shades of white:

Ivory Ivory wedding gowns tend to have a bit of a yellow undertone, resulting in a creamy white that might also be called “eggshell.”

Champagne (a.k.a. “rum”) A shade of white that has pinker undertones (it will look like a nice, full white in photographs).

Stark White: A bright, crisp white.

Silk, Diamond, or Natural White: Not as bright as stark white, this is the most natural white which looks best on most brides.

How to Choose Your White

Brides come in every color and shade too! That’s why it’s important to match the color of your wedding gown to your skin tone. Is your skin a rich, dark color? A stark white gown will look stunning against your skin. However, if your skin is very pale, choosing stark white could make you look washed out, so you’ll want to choose a richer shade of white, such as a warm champagne or ivory gown. If you have medium to olive skin, you can get away with nearly any shade of white, so try a few on to get a feel for the different shades of white. You may also want to take into consideration the time of year – if you darken up considerably in the sunshine, and you’re trying on dresses in the winter, chances are your skin-tone may be quite different by the tie your wedding day rolls around. Bring a photo of yourself in the summer time if you want to compare.

If you’re not sure which shade of white is right for you, try on a variety of colors – even if you’ve found the dress of your dreams, you’ll have to decide which color to order it in, and the bridal boutique might not have the exact color in stock that you want. The key is to try on several different shades of white, to find the perfect combination of style and color!

White Plus…

Once you’ve chosen the shade of white you plan to wear on your wedding day, it’s time to think about accent colors and accessories. White-on-white is a very elegant combination – consider choosing to carry a white bouquet and wear classic jewelry such as pearls or diamonds. If you are a traditional bride who likes a bit of chic styling, consider adding a bold color to your wedding gown. Bold hues like red and black look stunning against a white backdrop – add a sash or colored embroidery. Lighter hues, like champagne or silver can add a bit of depth and mystique to your attire through embellishment.

Wearing white on your wedding day is a traditional and classic choice. When it comes to choosing just the right shade of white, it’s a question of choosing the shade you are most comfortable in! For every shade of skin, there’s a perfect shade of white waiting for you!
