Plan to Learn

Before you run to the craft shop, it’s best to have a solid plan of exactly what you plan to make. Head to the library or bookstore and read up on crafts and do-it-yourself weddings. Head online and spend a few hours collecting ideas (and instructions!) for projects that suit your taste. Make a list of all the items you plan to do yourself – you may choose to make some items from scratch and purchase others. Popular DIY items for weddings include invitations, stationary, centerpieces, head table décor, and pew bows.

Choose a Theme

From colors to movies, choosing a theme is a great way to make sure all the different aspects of your wedding “go together.” Once you’ve got your theme colors down, you can get to work on choosing the items you’ll need for your décor. You’ve got your list of the decorations you want to make – now make a list of what you’ll need to make these things happen! You might be able to borrow some larger items, such as a glue gun, from a crafty friend.

Get Instruction

Check your local college guide for classes that may help you! Florist shops often offer bouquet making courses. Baking shops often offer cake decorating classes that show you step-by-step, how to make your own wedding cake. You can even learn how to design your own wedding dress! Check out what your community has to offer – you’ll learn a new skill and create a masterpiece for your wedding. Before you know it, people might start asking you to help with their weddings!

Make a Master

The thing about wedding décor is that you usually have to make more than one of each item. You may need to make two hundred! This can be exhausting and difficult! Remember to make one “perfect” one and then leave it close by for you to check each new one against. Invite a few friends over, supply some wine and cheese, and before you know it you’ll be learning where the phrase “Many hands make light work,” came from!

Pick and Choose

You don’t have to make every single aspect of your wedding on your own! You may find that in some cases, it is actually more cost effective to purchase ready-made items. Carefully choose which items you want to make yourself and which are better left to the professionals.

Don’t be Afraid…

Don’t be afraid to ask a friend for help! Don’t be afraid to ask your mom to do a few favors for you. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and come up with something particularly wild and crazy! It’s your special day – if you start planning well in advance and aren’t afraid to try new things, you’ll have people oohing and awing over your creations in no time!
